The service

Why service it?

Your system pulls the room's air through its filters and over a cold coil for hours on end. Over time dust, pollen and pet hair build up, the drain clogs and the outdoor unit gets dirty.

The result: weaker cooling, higher bills, musty smells and a bigger chance of a breakdown. A service cleans the parts you can't reach, checks how it's running and catches small problems before they need a repair.

Book it in the spring, before your system works its hardest. It also keeps a record many manufacturers expect to see.

Warning signs

Signs your system is due a service

  • Weaker airflow

  • Higher electricity use

Working harder for the same result.

  • No service in the last year

    Even if nothing seems wrong.

Before you book

What to plan before you book

Book before the heat

Spring is ideal. Engineers get busy once the weather turns.

Find the make and model

It's on a label on the indoor or outdoor unit.

Clear the way

Move anything under the indoor unit and clear a path to the outdoor one.

Tell us what's wrong

Noisy, smelly, slow or dripping? Mention it when you enquire.

Good to know

Good to know

Clean the filters yourself

Rinse them every few weeks while it's in use. Your manual shows how.

It shouldn't need regassing

The circuit is sealed. Low refrigerant means a leak, which is a repair, not a top-up.

Larger systems need leak checks

F-Gas rules set check intervals for systems above a certain refrigerant charge. Most home units are below it.

Smells mean it needs a clean

A musty smell is usually dirt and moisture on the coil. A deep clean sorts it.

Questions

Servicing questions

How often should air conditioning be serviced?

Most manufacturers recommend a service at least once a year. A system that runs for long hours, or in a dusty room or a home with pets, may need it more often.

Can you service a system someone else installed?

Servicing does not depend on who fitted the system. Tell us the make and model when you enquire so we can prepare for it.

Will a service make my system cheaper to run?

Clean filters and coils let air move freely, so the system reaches the temperature you set with less effort. A neglected system uses more electricity to do the same job.

Why does my air conditioning smell when it starts?

It is usually dust and moisture on the indoor coil and filters. Cleaning the coil and treating it as part of a service normally clears the smell.

Do I need to be at home for the service?

Someone needs to let us in to reach the indoor unit and switch the system on, and it helps to be there at the end so we can talk you through what we found.

What happens if the service finds a fault?

We explain what we found and what would fix it, and nothing extra is done until you agree.
